The SP parliamentary group decided on Friday to field two candidates in the race to succeed Alain Berset in the Federal Council elections on December 13. Women and men from all parts of the country and language regions would be considered, the SP announced via X, formerly Twitter.

The two candidates officially nominated by the party will be presented at a press conference on Saturday. The candidates are Bernese National Councillor Matthias Aebischer, Bernese Government Councillor Evi Allemann, Graubünden National Councillor Jon Pult, Basel Government President Beat Jans, Zurich Councillor of States Daniel Jositsch and Vaud National Councillor Roger Nordmann.

At its extraordinary meeting last Thursday, the SP Party Council had previously described all six candidates as "excellently qualified" for the Federal Council ticket. The candidates had presented themselves to party members and the public at four public hearings in Geneva, Biel, Olten and Schaffhausen from the beginning of November. This was after the SP examination committee gave the candidates the green light for the ticket.

On Friday, the SP parliamentary group also decided to hear all candidates for the Federal Chancellor election, which will also take place on December 13, as well as the Green Party candidate for the Federal Council elections, Fribourg National Councillor Gerhard Andrey, during the winter session, which begins on December 4.
