Stadler Rail, an East Swiss train manufacturer, has been contracted to deliver and maintain a total of 25 hydrogen trains in Italy. The company will supply ten hydrogen trains to the Italian railway operator Azienda regionale sarda trasporti (ARST) in Sardinia and fifteen more to the Calabrian Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC). A framework contract for the design, production, delivery and maintenance of the trains has been signed following a public tender in June. The vehicles will be equipped with a fuel cell and hydrogen drive and are intended for regional and suburban traffic on the narrow-gauge network (950 mm) in the two Italian regions. In a first step, the ARST and the FdC each called up six vehicles from the framework contracts. According to its own statements, Stadler is the first railway manufacturer in the world to develop, build and deliver narrow-gauge trains with a hydrogen drive. It is the first order for hydrogen trains in Europe.
