Train manufacturer Stadler has received an order from Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU) for its signaling subsidiary. The contract with Stadler Signalling runs for around ten years and covers services worth around CHF 34 million.
The contract relates to the modernization of the safety systems, as detailed in a joint press release issued by Stadler and SZU on Thursday. For SZU, the award is a "core element" in the "SZU 4.0" modernization programme. Stadler is already supplying SZU with 17 new trains at a cost of around 160 million Swiss francs.
In order to cope with the growing number of passengers, the federal government, the canton of Zurich and the SZU are investing around 800 million Swiss francs in the SZU's infrastructure and new rolling stock over the next few years. The modernized facilities are intended to increase the punctuality of rail operations. In addition, a 7.5-minute frequency is to be introduced for parts of the S4 and S10 lines during peak hours.
For Stadler, meanwhile, it is a "significant" order because it marks its entry into the Swiss signaling market for standard-gauge railroads. Peter Spuhler's company took over the German signaling technology company BBR at the end of 2021. Shortly before this, Stadler had strengthened its position in this area with the acquisition of Swiss company Bär Bahnsicherung AG.
The SZU's contract with Stadler for the delivery of 17 single-decker FLIRT S-Bahn multiple-unit trains, which was signed in mid-September, includes an option for up to ten additional vehicles. The Stadler trains will replace the eight Sihltalbahn S4 vehicles, some of which have reached the end of their service life after more than 30 years in operation. The new trains are expected to be in service from early summer 2028.
