Friday's floods and landslides in Valais caused extensive damage to property, particularly in the side valleys. According to the authorities, no people were harmed by the storms.
The highest flood levels were measured in the tributaries of the Rhone during Friday morning, said Raphaël Mayoraz, head of the Valais Natural Hazards Office, to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Friday. The storm had caused major material damage in some areas.
It is not yet possible to put a figure on this. No people were harmed, he added.
The highest water level along the Rhone is expected during Friday evening, Mayoraz added. The risk of flooding is currently very high, but not as critical as during the last major floods in October 2000, when the dams partially burst and the Rhone flooded the valley floor in Lower Valais.
Meanwhile, according to Mayoraz, the current storm also had a special constellation. "The fact that almost all the tributaries of the Rhone are carrying so much water at the same time is quite unusual," he said.
