The current heatwave in Switzerland is coming to an end on Saturday, after a series of summer days with temperatures above 25 degrees. In the first twelve days of October, temperatures were 3 to 7 degrees above the long-term average. The summer day record of 2018 was not broken in 2023. In the Swiss Plateau, temperatures exceeded the average of the years 1991 to 2020 by 3.5 to 6 degrees, according to the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (Meteoschweiz). The highest temperature excess was 6.5 to 7.5 degrees in the higher Alpine regions. Many Meteoschweiz stations registered the most intense ten-day heatwave in October since the start of measurements in 1864. However, it was still too early to make a final assessment of October. The September of 2023 was also unusually warm, with a nationwide temperature of 14.2 degrees, 3.8 degrees higher than the average of the period 1991 to 2020. This was significantly higher than the previous record September of 1961 with 13.3 degrees.
