The Swiss Abroad Organisation (ASO) has called for increased political participation of the “fifth Switzerland” at a press conference in St. Gallen on Thursday. The organisation expressed its satisfaction with the e-voting trial approved by the Federal Council on Wednesday in three cantons. ASO has been advocating for the introduction of e-voting for years, said former Council of States member and ASO president Filippo Lombardi at the press conference. It has been shown that more Swiss abroad vote when they can do so electronically. Swiss abroad will be able to vote electronically in the cantons of Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen and Thurgau in the national elections in October. However, the introduction of e-voting does not solve all problems, Lombardi said. It is important that the political engagement of Swiss abroad is encouraged by the state and institutions. This will also be the focus of the ASO Congress, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, where representatives of the major parties will be present to discuss the election manifesto of Swiss abroad.nnnnnnnnnn
