The three national airports handled significantly more passengers in the summer half of 2024 than in the previous year. While the pre-pandemic level of 2019 was again just exceeded at Zurich and Geneva airports, Basel remained below this level.

In total, around 32.2 million people traveled through Zurich, Geneva and Basel airports between May and October 2024, as reported by the Public Transport Information Service (Litra) on Tuesday. This is almost 28% more than in the winter half-year and 7% more than in the same period last year. Unsurprisingly, July and August were the busiest months.

With 17.7 million and 9.2 million passengers respectively, Zurich and Geneva airports also exceeded their pre-Covid pandemic figures by 0.4% and 0.8% in the summer half-year, according to the report. Only Basel Airport, with 5.2 million passengers, was 1.9% below the 2019 figure.

More traffic and growth in freight

At just under 289,000 take-offs and landings, aircraft movements were 4% up on the previous year. According to the communiqué, Basel recorded the strongest growth at +4.8%. In pre-pandemic times, there was still a gap of 3.4 percent across Switzerland, although the gap continued to narrow.

Air freight also increased significantly in the summer: aircraft flying to or from Swiss airports transported a total of almost 318,000 tons of freight between May and October. This is 19% more than in the same period last year and 0.9% more than in the summer half of 2019.

Zurich Airport recorded the largest increase in freight traffic with growth of 22%. This means that around 70 percent of freight volume is handled via Switzerland's largest airport.
