The artist Ugo Rondinone from Brunnen SZ has donated his minimalist sculpture "arched landscape" to the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. The earth sculpture can now be seen under a baroque ceiling fresco in the so-called Carlone Hall of the Upper Belvedere.
Carlone Contemporary is the name of a series in which contemporary works are confronted with the architecture of the Belvedere. In this series, "arched landscape" has been on display since the weekend and will continue until March 16, 2025, as the Belvedere announced on Wednesday.
"The earth-covered archway is simultaneously an object, an architectural form and a reference to art history, and makes multiple references to the historical ceiling fresco in the Carlone Hall, in which illusory architecture plays a central role," the work was described in the press release. According to General Director Stella Rollig, Rondinone's work "opens up a place of calm and contemplation".
Rondinone was born in Brunnen in 1964. The conceptual, media and installation artist has lived in Zurich since 1990 and in New York since 1998. Three years ago, his works were shown in a solo exhibition at Belvedere21.
"I would never have dreamed that an earth sculpture would one day be in dialog with the ceiling fresco by Carlo Innocenzo Carlone. What a wondrous idea that opens up a whole host of contrasts and similarities," Rondinone is quoted as saying in the press release. "Both works share a paradoxical mixture of vulnerability and strength and express a solidarity between man and nature. Both works address the dual reflection between the inner self and the natural world."
