The proportion of endangered bird species in Switzerland is three times higher than the global average. 40 percent of native bird species are threatened with extinction and a further fifth are on the early warning list. According to Birdlife, there is a biodiversity crisis.

Twelve percent of all bird species worldwide are threatened with extinction, the nature conservation organization Birdlife announced on Tuesday. Swiss birds are also represented on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of all globally threatened species. Three bird species on this global red list and five species on the global early warning list are also regular breeding birds in Switzerland.

A direct comparison of the numbers of nationally and globally endangered species is only possible to a limited extent. However, the large differences in birds and the particularly high proportion of endangered species in Switzerland would provide indications of the worrying situation of domestic biodiversity, the press release stated.
