The director of the Swiss Film Archive, Frédéric Maire, has paid tribute to Alain Delon as "one of the greatest European actors". With the death of the actor and producer, a myth is disappearing, Maire told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Sunday.
"He remains one of the greatest French, even European actors," said the director of the Cinémathèque suisse. "When I think of him, Greta Garbo comes to mind." The US actress of Swedish origin had voluntarily retired from the stage and thus retained her "incredible magnetism" - the same magnetism that Delon also had.
French-born Delon, who had also been a Swiss citizen since 2000, also had a residence in Geneva and enjoyed the city's discretion. He appeared several times on the French-speaking Swiss television station RTS in the program "Spécial cinéma". He was a regular guest and loved to express himself there.
Delon only appeared in one Swiss film, "Nouvelle Vague" (1990) by French-Swiss director Jean-Luc Godard. The fantasy drama was filmed on the shores of Lake Geneva.
