The International Society for Human Rights Switzerland (ISHR) is awarding the Swiss Human Rights Prize 2023 to the co-founder of the International Criminal Court, Geneva lawyer Philippe Currat, who will receive the award on December 16 in Bern.
Currat has been working with the IGFM Switzerland working group in Geneva for over a decade. He has helped numerous refugees threatened with deportation to avoid being sent back to their home countries, where they face persecution, torture and perhaps even death, according to a press release issued on Thursday.
IGFM Switzerland is now recognizing "this unprecedented commitment to refugees under threat" with the Swiss Human Rights Award 2023, according to a press release.
The Geneva-based lawyer is on the list of legal counsel admitted to appear before the International Criminal Court. As a member (since 2009) and later Secretary General (from 2012 to 2017) of the International Criminal Bar Association, he campaigned for the recognition of an effective and institutionalized defence before the International Criminal Court, according to the press release.
