Exponents of Swiss political parties have different views on the impact of the Trump election on Switzerland. FDP President Thierry Burkart said on Wednesday on Swiss Radio SRF's "Rendez-vous" program that the election of Donald Trump meant uncertainty for Switzerland.
The new US President-elect does not have a clear election program. The election also means unpredictability in terms of foreign policy, according to the Aargau Council of States.
SVP parliamentary group leader Thomas Aeschi also said on the radio that there was great concern that the world was increasingly breaking up into blocs - one American, one Chinese and one European. "This makes it more difficult for Switzerland, which is heavily export-oriented, to serve its sales markets."
Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter, a centrist foreign policy expert, said on the radio that Europe would now do well to strengthen itself so that it is not crushed between the blocs. As a small economy, Switzerland has every interest in pursuing policy together with a strong Europe.
SP Co-President Cédric Wermuth said that Switzerland's role after Trump takes office will be to insist, together with other countries, on the importance of international agreements and support for Ukraine.
Thomas Aeschi believes that Switzerland's policy of neutrality could experience a "revival in this increasingly polarized world" - Switzerland played a similar role during the Cold War. "I definitely see potential for Switzerland as a mediator," says Aeschi.
SiK President is concerned
The President of the National Council's Security Committee (Sik-N), National Councillor Priska Seiler-Graf (SP/ZH), expressed her concern about the geopolitical consequences of Trump's election. She is "deeply concerned", Seiler wrote on the short message platform X.
National Councillor Corina Gredig (GLP/ZH) also wrote on the platform that the USA was setting a dangerous course. Switzerland should strengthen its relations with Europe. It can no longer afford an isolationist course, wrote Councillor of States Marianne Binder (Center/AG).
The SP Switzerland also wrote on X that Donald Trump's election endangers democracy and fundamental rights. "Around the world, the far right is inciting hatred against migrants, attacking women's rights and denying the climate crisis," the SP continued.
