Most Swiss people are very satisfied, a survey shows. However, there are striking differences between the age groups: one fifth of 18 to 29-year-olds suffer from a diagnosed psychological illness or disorder.

This means that the proportion of people currently affected (19%) in this age group is almost twice as high as among over-29s, where 8% currently suffer from a diagnosed psychological illness. Moreover, more than a tenth of young people affected have no access to therapy.

This is the result of a survey by the market research company Yougov Switzerland (formerly Link), which was published on Tuesday to mark this year's World Happiness Day on Wednesday.

This difference between the age groups is also reflected in the actual relationship that the participants in the survey have to psychological or psychiatric therapies: Of the participants aged between 60 and 79, almost three quarters (71 percent) have never been in therapy and feel no need for it. However, the proportion increases again in the middle age groups.

Basically happy

In principle, most Swiss people are happy. On a scale of 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied), the vast majority of participants (73%) stated that they felt very satisfied with their lives, which corresponds to a scale point of 7 or higher. Moreover, this satisfaction appears to be stable in the long term for almost every second person.

Participants were also asked how often they undertake various happiness-promoting activities. A third rated social interaction with friends or family as the most important activity for their own well-being. This is followed by time for themselves (15 percent) and sport (11 percent).

The survey was conducted from February 14 to 28 of this year in Yougov's Swiss online panel in German, French and Italian. 1,253 people aged 18 to 79 living in Switzerland were surveyed - according to Yougov Switzerland, this is representative of the resident population.
