Swiss Scientists Uncover the Secrets of Aging

Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) have identified a molecular signalling pathway that plays a key role in the ageing of the brain. This pathway, known as cGAS/STING, is responsible for triggering an inflammatory response when foreign DNA is present in the cell. When this pathway was blocked in mice, it resulted in significant improvements in spatial and associative memory, as well as increased muscle strength and endurance. It is unclear whether this pathway can be blocked in humans, as mice have a much shorter lifespan than humans and the molecular and cellular changes between the two species may be fundamentally different. Additionally, it must be determined whether long-term inhibition of the pathway has any side effects. The research was conducted in collaboration with the University Hospital Lausanne Chuv, the University of Freiburg (Germany), and the Dutch Cancer Institute.nnnn
