Lucerne-based steelmaker Swiss Steel appreciates the National Council's commitment to the economically ailing steel and aluminum production companies in Switzerland. The company acknowledges the "commitment" of the National Council, the company explained on Tuesday at the request of the news agency AWP.
The National Council had previously approved bridging aid. Specifically, iron, steel and light metal foundries of "strategic importance" are to be exempted from part of the fees for using the electricity grid for four years. The Council of States will now decide on the urgent law.
However, government support is not a sustainable solution to the fundamental challenges facing the industry, emphasized Swiss Steel. However, it would provide "selective" relief. And Swiss Steel is striving to secure the long-term competitiveness of the Emmenbrücke site.
The company did not comment on the question of whether and how financial relief would affect the planned redundancies. No statements were made regarding the ongoing consultation process with the social partners.
In mid-November, Swiss Steel announced the reduction of 800 jobs. At the production site in Emmenbrücke, which employs 750 people, 130 jobs are to be cut, 80 of them through redundancies.
