It's not just Mr. and Mrs. Swiss who travel often. Swiss dogs also get around the world a lot, as a survey by travel provider Interhome shows. For vacations with their four-legged friends, however, dog owners often stay at home or travel to a neighboring country.
While his owner packs her suitcase, Anthony the dog gets more and more excited. Because he knows that the fuller the suitcase, the sooner he will go on vacation - and there he will smell new scents, meet other dogs and get to play with his ball by the sea all day. Anthony is one of many dogs in Switzerland who accompany their owners on vacation.
As Interhome announced on Monday, there are 1400 Google searches for "vacation with dog" in Switzerland every month. According to the vacation home provider, however, dog owners are not particularly drawn to traveling far away with their four-legged friends. Interhome guests with dogs prefer to spend their vacations at home.
In second place on the popularity scale for vacations with dogs is Italy, followed by France, Spain in fourth place and Austria in fifth place. The study is based on Interhome booking data from the last twelve months for bookings with dogs. The sample was collected in April 2024 and included all bookings with pets.
It's hardly surprising that Swiss people tend to stay at home with their dogs or travel to a neighboring country: Anthony, for example, needs a pee break and some exercise every few hours. A car journey of eight hours at a time is out of the question with him. His owners therefore divide the journey into stages or stay within a radius of around five hours of their home. An airplane journey would also be very frightening for the large male dog, who would not be allowed to travel in the cabin.
According to Interhome data, the most popular months for dog owners to travel with their four-legged friends are August and July, followed by September and June.
