According to Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, Switzerland will continue to work towards lasting peace in Ukraine. He emphasized this at a ministerial conference on Ukraine in Montréal, Canada. One of the demands made there was the exchange of all prisoners of war, according to the Swiss Foreign Ministry.

Switzerland will take part in discussions on how Russia can be involved in a peace process with a view to a second peace summit, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Thursday.

At the Ministerial Conference on Humanitarian Aspects for a Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine, Switzerland made it clear that respect for the Geneva Conventions should not just be demanded. This must also be reinforced by concrete measures. For example, Switzerland is contributing its expertise to the search for missing persons in Ukraine.

The participants also called for the exchange of all prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine and the return of all deported children and political prisoners to Ukraine. Mr Cassis spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha and Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide about the path to peace in Ukraine based on the UN Charter.

According to the FDFA, the meeting in Montréal concludes the series of follow-up conferences announced in June 2024 at the conference on the Bürgenstock in the canton of Nidwalden.
