Switzerland took over the chairmanship of the UN Security Council for the second time on Tuesday. It will lead the discussions for a month as several conflicts intensify. Violations of international humanitarian law are increasing and UN Security Council resolutions are not being implemented.
The chairmanship month offers Switzerland the opportunity to focus on its thematic priorities and provide impetus to the Council, as outlined in a press release issued by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) on Tuesday. This includes, in particular, promoting sustainable peace and protecting the civilian population.
Switzerland is planning two flagship events during its chairmanship month. On October 21, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will chair a Council meeting on the impact of current and future scientific and technological developments on peace and security. The focus will be on the opportunities and risks of these developments.
On October 24, the UN Security Council, chaired by President Viola Amherd, will address the topic of "Women, Peace and Security" as part of its annual open debate. The focus will be on the role of women in peace processes.
Switzerland was recently tasked with organizing a meeting of the parties to the Geneva Conventions on the Middle East conflict. It has also been under particular scrutiny and criticism for several months due to its aid to the Palestinian relief organization UNRWA.
