The Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis visited the 78th UN General Assembly in New York and noted the increased diplomatic status of Switzerland as a Security Council member. He observed a great interest from many countries to engage in conversations with Switzerland during the UN summit this week. Switzerland is particularly important for countries involved in conflicts. Cassis welcomed the idea of a special tribunal for the Russian attack on Ukraine, but stressed that it must be internationally established. He also signed a declaration to protect nuclear power plants worldwide from occupation or exploitation by military forces. Furthermore, he spoke out against arbitrary detentions, which violate international law. He declared that it is unacceptable for citizens to be held as hostages in inter-state disputes.
