It is now clear which 20 films will be in the running for the Golden Bear at this year's 74th Berlinale. Of the 30 countries represented, Switzerland is only represented by one co-production.
"Gloria!" " is the directorial debut of Italian Margherita Vicario. To date, she has made a name for herself as an actress and above all as a singer-songwriter. The film is an Italian-Swiss co-production, supported by the Federal Office of Culture and the Ticino Film Commission. The cast also includes the Ticino actress Jasmin Mattei.
The film is set in a girls' boarding school in Venice at the end of the 18th century and tells the story of Teresa, a young woman who challenges her environment with new and unusual music.
Two German directors, Matthias Glasner and Andreas Dresen, are represented in the competition. Glasner's drama "Sterben" stars Lars Eidinger (48), Corinna Harfouch (69) and Ronald Zehrfeld (47), among others. Carlo Chatrian, Artistic Director of the Berlinale, said that "Sterben" is Glasner's most ambitious film to date.
Dresen is represented with "In Liebe, Eure Hilde". The film is about the resistance fighter Hilde Coppi during the Second World War and stars actress Liv Lisa Fries (33).
In addition to the two German films, the competition also features a German-Austrian production. Actress and musician Anja Plaschg can be seen in "Des Teufels Bad" by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala.

An unusual film told from the perspective of a deceased hippo - Pepe the hippo (directed by Nelson Carlos de Los Santos Arias). Pepe is also a kind of celebrity - he is said to have been stolen from Africa and lived in the private zoo of Colombian drug baron Pablo Escobar.
