Switzerland returns to the top 20 countries for gender equality

Switzerland has returned to the top 20 countries in the World Economic Forum's (WEF) index on gender equality. At the current rate of progress, however, it would still take 134 years to achieve gender equality worldwide.
In the report published in Geneva on Wednesday, Switzerland moved up one place within a year. It had fallen last year after being in 10th place in 2021.
Iceland remains at the top, ahead of Finland, which has taken over second place from Norway. Overall, the world has closed 68.5 percent of the gap between women and men, but has only improved by 0.1 percent in one year.
Europe is still the regional bloc that has best succeeded in reducing inequalities. Switzerland lost one place in this ranking and is now in 14th place. It is in 53rd place for economic participation, in the top 20 for political emancipation, but only in 115th place for healthcare.
