Switzerland's official development assistance (ODA) amounted to CHF 4.640 billion in 2023. This corresponded to 0.60 percent of gross domestic income, which was a new high. A quarter of the money went to asylum.
At CHF 1.311 billion, the attributable share of asylum costs in Switzerland accounted for a total of 28% of ODA, as announced by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) on Thursday. CHF 538 million of this was attributable to persons with protection status S from Ukraine.
In the previous year, the ratio of ODA to gross domestic income was 0.4 percentage points lower at 0.56%.
This result was due in particular to the extensive support efforts in connection with the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East and the costs for the reception of asylum seekers, refugees and people seeking protection during the first twelve months of their stay in Switzerland, as the FDFA also reported.
