Around 200 tons of gold are owned by Swiss private individuals. That is roughly equivalent to the weight of a blue whale.
For comparison: according to the Swiss National Bank (SNB), its gold holdings have remained unchanged for many years at around 1040 tons.
A good third of the yellow precious metal is stored in their own household. According to the data, a fifth of gold owners store the precious metal unsecured in a hiding place or even in their own garden.
According to the HSG survey, it is estimated that around 5 percent of private gold lies in the gardens of its owners. This means that around 10 tons of gold, or the equivalent of 750 million Swiss francs, are buried underground.
