The 41st edition of the Belluard Bollwerk festival in Fribourg focuses on combative artists under the motto "Lebenswut". 27 multidisciplinary contemporary performing arts projects are on the program.
Artists from Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Spain, France, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Poland have been invited to this year's Belluard Bollwerk. They are all committed to "uncovering the mechanisms of oppression in order to enable a life in dignity", the organizers wrote in a press release on Tuesday.
The festival is dedicated to unconventional and militant artistic creation in the fields of dance, theater, performance, literature, music and critical thinking. Eva-Maria Bertschy kicks off this year's edition with "Fremde Seelen". In her bilingual play, she follows in the footsteps of a Vietnamese priest who lived in the canton of Fribourg. Actress Carol Schuler, who made a name for herself as Inspector Tessa Ott in Zurich's "Tatort", and Congolese musician Kojack Kossakamvwe will be on stage.
In addition, the 41st Belluard Bollwerk offers a sound walk through the public space, where the audience can enter into a dialog with the dead, or a choreography with the ghosts of three Polish ballet dancers. The film "We have decided not to die" aims to defy the transience of life. Various authors have written texts especially for the festival; the texts will be presented as performative readings. The program also includes two installations and concerts ranging from drum rhythms to folk music. Bachelor students will conclude the festival with contemporary dance.
The 41st edition of Belluard Bollwerk will take place from June 27 to July 6. After five years, it will be the last edition under the artistic director Laurence Wagner. The festival's main venue is the Grosse Bollwerk in the city of Fribourg.
