In Switzerland, the basic social assistance requirement for living expenses is to increase by 2.9 percent. This was decided by the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Social Affairs (SODK) at a meeting in Bern.

As the conference announced on Monday, the 2.9% increase is in line with the Federal Council's decision to adjust the AHV and IV inflation rates. The adjustment is intended to ensure adequate support for people on low incomes.

The SODK recommends that the cantons implement the change by January 1, 2026 at the latest. The SODK made its decision on the recommendation of the Swiss Conference for Social Assistance (Skos).

According to the SODK, basic needs for living expenses in private households include food, drinks and tobacco products, clothing and shoes, energy consumption, general housekeeping, personal care, expenses for local transportation, communications, internet, radio/TV, education, leisure, sport, entertainment and other items.
