The Swiss Ständerat has voted to ban tobacco advertising in newspapers and magazines, in line with the Tabakwerbeverbotsinitiative. The ban will apply to all publications, except those primarily intended for foreign markets or exclusively for those in the tobacco industry. The Ständerat also voted to accept the partial revision of the Tabakproduktegesetzes, with 37 votes in favour and 3 against. The ban on tobacco advertising in newspapers and magazines is an important step in reducing the influence of the tobacco industry in Switzerland. It is hoped that this will help to reduce the number of people who smoke, and the associated health risks. The ban will also help to protect children and young people from the influence of tobacco advertising. The Ständerat's decision to accept the partial revision of the Tabakproduktegesetzes is also a positive step, as it will help to ensure that the ban is properly enforced.
