The federal government should help the ailing Swiss steelworks

The federal government is to help struggling Swiss steelworks. Following the National Council, the Council of States has also decided in principle that two Swiss steelworks - and two aluminum foundries in Valais - should be exempted from part of the electricity grid usage fees.
On Monday, the small chamber voted 25 to 17 in favor of amending the Electricity Supply Act accordingly. Following the approval of both chambers, the law now stipulates that iron, steel and light metal foundries "of strategic importance" will receive financial relief under certain conditions.
Stahl Gerlafingen SO, Steeltec in Emmenbrücke LU and the Valais aluminum foundries Constellium and Novelis are to benefit from this. A portion of the electricity grid usage fees will be waived for four years. All electricity consumers are to pay for this discount jointly.
Companies must fulfill various conditions in order to receive bridging aid. As the Council of States tightened these conditions on Monday, the bill will return to the National Council.
