The Swiss People's Party (SVP) is calling for an extraordinary session of Parliament to be held next week to discuss the new asylum practice for Afghan women, in the event that the Federal Council does not take immediate action.

On Friday, Swiss People's Party (SVP) parliamentary group leader and National Council member Thomas Aeschi (ZG) called for an extraordinary session, as the parliamentary group announced. Due to the dramatic asylum situation, urgent measures are necessary, Aeschi said in response to a request from the news agency Keystone-SDA. He therefore submitted a request to the National Council office for an extraordinary session.

A quarter of the members of a council can request an extraordinary session. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) meets this criterion. The council office determines the date and agenda of the session. The extraordinary session is usually attached to an ordinary session. The winter session takes place from 4 to 22 December.

Swiss Solidarity (SVP) is putting pressure on the Swiss Federal Council to take action.

The Swiss People's Party (SVP) is pushing for the Parliament to convene next week. Specifically, the National Council and the Council of States are to discuss two identical motions from the SVP and FDP on Thursday, 2 November. These motions call on the Federal Council to reverse the change in practice regarding asylum applications from Afghan women that has been in effect since 17 July 2023.

The Swiss People's Party (SVP) has called for an extraordinary session of the Federal Council to be convened if the Federal Council does not decide at its next regular meeting on Wednesday to change its new asylum practice regarding Afghan women. It is unlikely that the Federal Council will be pressured into making a decision.

On Monday, the National Council Office made a decision.

The Office of the National Council will decide on Monday whether and, if so, how to respond to the SVP's request. According to National Council President Martin Candinas (Mitte/GR), an extraordinary session on the mentioned proposals can only take place if the Federal Council has answered them. This has not yet been the case.

The Swiss Federal Council has proposed an extraordinary session of the Federal Assembly to take place in the coming weeks. However, the Council of States must also agree to the proposal for the session to take place. According to Councilor Ruedi Candinas, the Council of States office must also make a corresponding decision for the session to take place. The Coordination Conference, a body composed of the National Council and Council of States offices, will be responsible for setting the date for the extraordinary session.
