The Wallis State Prosecutor's Office has opened a preliminary investigation into possible sexual assaults in the Catholic Church. The State Prosecutor's Office has commissioned the Cantonal Police to investigate possible crimes in Wallis that have not expired or been treated in the report on the pilot project on the history of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Switzerland since the mid-20th century. The presumption of innocence applies to the accused persons during the preliminary proceedings. The pilot study of the University of Zurich was commissioned by three Catholic bodies, including the Swiss Bishops' Conference (SBK). The researchers counted 1002 cases of sexual abuse since the mid-20th century. They believe this is only the tip of the iceberg, as most cases were not reported and the documents destroyed.
