The 24th International Meeting of Friends of the Citroën 2CV began on Tuesday in Courroux near Delsberg JU. Organisers expect around 5000 of the legendary cars, known as "Döschwo" in Switzerland and "Ente" elsewhere, from 30 countries. The six-day event is the largest and longest ever held in the Jura region, according to Guillaume Lachat, the regional tourism director. A 53-hectare area, equivalent to around 75 football fields, has been set aside for the classic cars and their fans, divided into a festival area and a camping ground. On Tuesday morning, long queues of 2CVs formed at the camping ground check-in, with arrivals from numerous countries including Australia and Martinique. The majority of participants came from Switzerland, the Netherlands, France and Germany, with some having been on the road for a week. The honking of horns is not a sign of anger or impatience, but rather a way of greeting each other. Evening concerts and other events are planned, as well as a competition for the most beautiful "Döschwo" and a spare parts market. The festival, organised by the 2CV World Meeting Organisation and Jura Tourism, has a budget of 1.7 million francs. To minimise disruption to local traffic, the "Döschwo" must follow a one-way system in the surrounding villages, which does not apply to other local traffic. The Jura region hopes to benefit from the event, with a specially designed route to showcase the area's beauty and encourage visitors to return. The Citroën 2CV was a cult vehicle of the hippie movement and a much-desired car for many poorer people in France. Over the years, the frugally equipped car has become a well-maintained collector's item and a symbol of a certain lifestyle. The international 2CV meeting has been held in Switzerland three times, in Avenches VD in 1977, and in the Haslital in the Bernese Oberland in 1991. Citroën produced 3.9 million of the four-door limousines and 1.2 million of the delivery van "Fourgonette" between 1949 and 1990. The 2CV has an air-cooled two-cylinder four-stroke boxer engine and front-wheel drive, and was inexpensive to buy and maintain.
