Susanne Hartmann from the center achieved the best result in the re-elections to the St. Gallen government. Health chief Bruno Damann (center) came last among the re-elected members of the government.

The top spot belonged to Susanne Hartmann (center) with 90,728 votes. In 2020, it was Bruno Damann (center) who had come first in the renewal elections. Now he came last of the five elected with 81,841 votes.

The reason for the poorer performance of the head of the health department could have been criticism of the cantonal hospital policy with major job cuts and discussions about emergency care in Toggenburg.

Head-to-head race between the SVP candidates

The two SVP candidates fought a neck-and-neck race. Dana Zemp received 58,653 votes, 594 more than Christof Hartmann. The absolute majority was 73,182 votes.

Bettina Surber (SP) followed some way behind with 48,457 votes and Daniel Bosshard (Greens) with 45,587 votes. A surprise result was achieved by Sarah Bösch, who is not a party member, with 39,522 votes, beating GLP candidate Sarah Noger-Engeler by 563 votes. The voter turnout was 46.8 percent.

Stefan Kölliker (SVP) and Fredy Fässler (SP) are no longer standing for re-election on March 3. The second round of voting will take place on April 14.
