The mountain of packages under Swiss Christmas trees is likely to be somewhat less lavish this year than in previous years. A study shows that people in this country are spending less money on toys.
Whether it's a Lego spaceship, a mermaid Barbie or a dog cuddly toy, children in Switzerland are once again looking forward to toys this Christmas. According to a survey by market researcher Nielsen, local consumers are spending an average of CHF 373 on toys to give to the children around them.
However, this means that spending is around 10 percent lower than in the previous year and even a quarter lower than in the record year of 2022, according to a press release issued on Monday. At that time, Swiss parents, godparents, aunts and grandparents were significantly more generous with an average spend of 500 francs.
According to Nielsen, economic uncertainty is dampening the Swiss population's Christmas spending. This is also reflected in the increased search for bargains: According to the survey, a fifth - and therefore 5 percent more - of respondents bought their gifts on Black Friday or during Black Week this year in order to benefit from discounts.
