The Vaud authorities have identified the wolf shot down on Mont Tendre in mid-January. Despite its powerful build, it was not the leader of the pack, but a cub. The investigation into the case of a wolf poached in the Broye at the beginning of the year is still ongoing.
The wolf that was shot by gamekeepers on Mont Tendre in the Vaud Jura on the night of January 11-12 has been identified on the basis of DNA analyses and an autopsy at the University of Bern. It was a young male wolf born within the pack in 2023, as the canton of Vaud announced on Tuesday.
The young wolf weighed 33 kilograms and, according to the wildlife authorities, was as developed as an adult animal. The canton of Vaud had received permission from the federal government to kill a cub or the leader of the pack as part of wolf regulation after it had killed numerous farm animals in 2023. In the event of new attacks on livestock or problematic behavior, new measures to regulate the Mont-Tendre pack could be taken from 1 June 2024, according to the Vaud authorities.
Wolf wanted
The wolf poached in the Broye at the beginning of the year was the male M212, which was first recorded in the region in 2022. His remains were discovered on January 3 near Avenches VD. The public prosecutor's investigation into this poaching case is still ongoing.
