The umbrella organization Agile.ch draws a sobering balance on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities next Sunday. Switzerland is still a long way from achieving real equality.

Switzerland is celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with elaborate specialist conferences by public authorities and political declarations of intent, the organization announced on Thursday. In reality, however, those affected are still confronted with numerous disadvantages.

Agile.ch identifies problems in several areas: Many disabled people have to live in institutions because they lack the support they need to live independently. They are unable to move around independently as there are still many barriers to public transport and access to buildings. And they are denied equal participation in economic, social and political life.

In its communiqué, the umbrella organization called for Switzerland to finally fulfil the commitments it made when it ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2014.
