Unknown persons blew up an ATM in Oey in the Bernese Oberland on Monday night. The affected branch of the regional bank AEK had to close the branch temporarily, as reported on its website.
A reader's picture on the "20 Minuten" online portal showed the damaged entrance to the bank branch. The square in front of the entrance was littered with debris.
The Bern cantonal police confirmed an operation, according to "20 Minuten". They announced that they would provide further information later. According to AEK Bank, the damage was caused by a criminal act. The village of Oey is located at the entrance to the Diemtigtal valley.
In recent months, several ATMs have been blown up, particularly in western Switzerland. There have also been incidents in the canton of Bern, for example in Wattenwil at the beginning of July and in Jegenstorf in June.
On September 10, French security forces arrested 13 suspected members of a gang that could be linked to ten ATM blasts in Switzerland.
