The Uri Security Directorate has authorized the shooting of a wolf that is roaming the Meiental valley and killing sheep. It is to be expected that the wolf will carry out further attacks on livestock in the area of the Kartigel Alp, it explained.
The Kartigel alp lies above Maien in the municipality of Wassen. In the past few days, seven sheep have fallen victim to a wolf there, according to a statement from the Safety Directorate on Monday.
According to the Uri authorities, the Kartigel alp is an alp on which herd protection measures against the wolf are not reasonable. According to the announcement, a permit to shoot a wolf that does not belong to a pack can be issued if six livestock are killed within four months. The damage threshold has thus been reached, according to the Security Directorate.
The shooting permit is limited to 60 days. The wolf may only be shot in the area where it has killed livestock. According to the press release, the cantonal game warden will be on the lookout. If necessary, they will be supported by hunters.
