The canton of Uri would like to see traffic management measures to relieve Gotthard road traffic. Among other things, it is proposing a booking system. After the Uri delegation praised the progress made in the meantime, the Council of States rejected the initiative.
Without opposition, it said no to the canton of Uri's status initiative on Thursday. The initiative will now go to the National Council. If it also says no, the issue is off the table. Thanks to the measures adopted by the federal government, the initiative is now unnecessary, said both Uri representatives in the Council.
The state initiative calls for better traffic management in the Gotthard road tunnel as well as management of the highway exits and entrances so that the cantonal road is not overloaded by evasive traffic. In the medium term, the motion advocates a slot system, i.e. a digital booking system.
In the meantime, the Federal Council has decided to have temporary closures of junctions on the A2 southbound analyzed and tested. It also wants to make adjustments to cantonal roads on busy highways, for example with metering systems at village entrances. However, he rejects a slot or toll system.
There was unanimous agreement on the necessity of the initiative in the cantonal parliament of Uri. The initiative was justified by the fact that traffic jams on the Gotthard were not only occurring at long weekends and during vacation periods, but had become a permanent condition. This puts a strain on the local population.
