A collector of archaeological objects has been arrested in Valais. The police seized numerous archaeological artifacts from him. They speak of an "impressive collection of inestimable value for the history of our canton".

The man was caught red-handed in mid-May while illegally searching for archaeological objects, as reported by the Valais cantonal police on Wednesday. As part of the joint investigation by the cantonal archaeology office and the cantonal police, a 51-year-old Swiss man was arrested at the time of the crime.

The police point out that the activity constitutes "a serious violation of the Cultural Property Transfer Act and the cantonal legislation on the protection of nature and cultural heritage". They confiscated jewelry and tools dating from the Bronze Age around 2000 years ago to the present day. It also seized several Celtic, Roman, medieval and modern coins.
