Victims of drug tests in Thurgau receive 25,000 francs each

On Wednesday, the Thurgau cantonal parliament approved the solidarity contributions for victims of drug testing at the psychiatric clinic in Münsterlingen TG. The canton is expecting up to 500 beneficiaries and an amount of 12.5 million francs.
The Grand Council passed a corresponding law at its first reading on Wednesday. Persons who were administered test drugs in psychiatric clinics in the canton of Thurgau between 1940 and 1980 are entitled to financial compensation of CHF 25,000 each. Any heirs are excluded.
At the Münsterlingen psychiatric clinic at that time, unauthorized test substances were administered to mostly uninformed patients. The psychiatrist Roland Kuhn, who is considered the discoverer of the first antidepressant, was responsible for this. He tested the substances on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry.
As the successor to the former companies, the Basel-based pharmaceutical group Novartis contributes CHF 4 million to the solidarity contributions.
