To mark the 100th anniversary of Vincent O. Carter's birth, his partner Liselotte Haas and literary agent Katharina Altas are handing over his estate to the Swiss Literary Archives, as the parties involved announced on Friday.
This includes Carter's entire literary and artistic oeuvre, such as typescripts of published and unpublished texts, correspondence and objects documenting Carter's life in Bern. Haas managed the estate and expanded it to include documents on the history of Carter's influence.
Carter's estate represents a significant addition to the holdings of the Swiss Literary Archives at the Swiss National Library in Bern. The estate opens up new historical perspectives on topics such as racism, migration and interculturality. Once the estate has been catalogued, it will be accessible to researchers.
Carter (1924 - 1983) was born in the USA, was stationed in Europe during the Second World War and moved to Bern in 1953. In 1970, for example, "The Bern Book: A Record of the Voyage of the Mind" was published. The book is a portrait of the city, the cultural scene at the time and Carter's living environment, according to Limmat Verlag. However, it also deals with the fact that "as 'the first and only Negro in town', as he called himself, Carter was stared at as if no one had ever seen a black person here".
