The railroad line between Visp and Täsch in Upper Valais will remain closed until at least mid-August. The Vispa river and its tributaries flowing through the Mattertal valley caused considerable damage at several points along the line during the floods.
"The situation between Kalpetran and St. Niklaus is particularly critical," said Egon Gsponer, Head of Infrastructure at the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, speaking to the media in Brig on Wednesday. The repair of the tracks was difficult because the extent of the damage and the difficult access to these locations made it difficult to transport materials and construction machinery.
It is not yet possible to put a figure on the damage. "It will amount to over 10 million francs in terms of repairs," said company boss Fernando Lehner. "On top of that, there will be over a million francs in costs for the deployment of replacement buses," he continued.
The replacement bus service ensures that Zermatt VS can be reached.
