The search for a total of five missing persons following a severe storm in the Maggia Valley last weekend is being hampered by the fact that the river is carrying a lot of water. According to information from the Ticino cantonal police, it is currently only possible to search on the surface of the water.
The water level of the Maggia does not currently allow for more thorough checks, according to a press release from the cantonal police.
Around fifteen specialists are currently involved in the search, including members of the cantonal police (search and investigation unit, dog squadron, lake unit and helicopter specialists) as well as rescue teams from the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). The searchers were supported by military helicopters and civilian helicopter crews.
The operations focused in particular on the areas of Peccia and Prato Sornico and on the section of river between Pian di Peccia and Bignasco.
