Winter sportsman rescued from avalanche in Andermatt UR dies

A freerider buried by an avalanche in Andermatt UR on Saturday died in hospital on Monday. The man was rescued in a critical condition. According to a statement from the Uri cantonal police on Wednesday, he died in a hospital outside the canton.

The snow slab fell below the Älpetligrat on Saturday afternoon and took three winter sports enthusiasts with it. One was able to free himself. A second managed to dig himself out up to his waist. He was rescued with minor injuries.

According to the cantonal police, the third freerider was buried under a two-meter-thick mass of snow. He was located thanks to a search device. When he was dug out, he was no longer conscious.

According to the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, four people have died in three avalanches in Switzerland this winter.
