In talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Chinese head of state and government Xi Jinping emphasized that China was not involved in the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, according to information from Beijing.

China is neither a party nor a participant in the Ukraine crisis, it said in a statement on Tuesday following the meeting between the two in Beijing. Instead, China has always "promoted the peace talks in its own way", Xi said.

Beijing supports an international peace conference "in due course", but Russia and Ukraine would have to accept it, the Chinese said. Moscow has already canceled the planned conference in Switzerland. The Chinese response to an invitation from the Alpine country is still pending.

China is considered a close ally of Russia. Accusations of Chinese companies supplying so-called dual-use goods - goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes - to Russia have been raised time and again. The USA, for example, has already sanctioned companies from the Far East for this reason.

Xi also put forward four vaguely formulated principles to avoid an escalation in the war. Peace and stability must be given more priority instead of pursuing "one's own selfish interests", it said. In addition, more effort should be made to ease the situation "instead of pouring oil on the fire". Thirdly, conditions were needed to restore peace. Finally, he called for greater efforts to reduce the negative impact on the global economy for the benefit of the stability of global industrial and supply chains.
