Young people in Switzerland feel less stressed by social media than expected. This is one of the findings of Pro Juventute's first youth study. Girls and young women fare significantly worse than their male counterparts.
The study was conducted in collaboration with the child and adolescent psychiatry department of the Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich, as Pro Juventute reported. The foundation initially placed the study in the Sunday media. Adolescents and young adults between the ages of 14 and 25 were surveyed.
In the representative survey, 88% of teenagers and young adults stated that they felt mentally well. In terms of physical health, the figure is as high as 94%. "Despite these high figures, 30 percent of young people also state that they often feel tired and exhausted," writes Pro Juventute.
School and exams are the most stressful
The biggest contributors to stress are school and training stress with exams. Furthermore, general pressure to perform, money worries, high demands and worries about the future career. Surprisingly, however, stress caused by social media is only a major problem for around 15 percent.
However, this survey also reveals a familiar pattern: girls and young women are significantly worse off than boys and young men of the same age. Twelve percent of the participating girls and women were undergoing psychotherapeutic treatment at the time of the survey. Around a third had already sought professional help in the form of psychotherapy.
