"Sarah Morris. All Systems Fail" is the title of the latest exhibition at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern. The museum is paying tribute to the work of Sarah Morris over the last 30 years with a comprehensive retrospective.
There are more than 100 works on display, including paintings and film installations. The subtitle of the exhibition - "All Systems Fail" - gives away the direction of the content.
The retrospective addresses the "currently widespread pessimism about culture and progress", the Zentrum Paul Klee wrote in a press release. It also addresses "the failure of political and social structures as well as fears about the future".
The exhibition shows 56 paintings by the American artist. Morris' style is characterized by geometry, abstraction and strong colors. Stylistically, the artist incorporates elements of Pop Art, American Minimalism and "Optical Art" in her paintings. The latter is a style that plays with the viewer's perception.
In her films, the artist explores the character of places and cities in transition, using the metropolis of Los Angeles as an example. The Creaviva Children's Museum at the Zentrum Paul Klee is presenting the interactive exhibition "Metropolis Hidden", which thematically incorporates the retrospective.
Morris was born in 1967 and lives in New York. The artist has already had solo exhibitions in Switzerland in the past, for example at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen in 2008.
"Sarah Morris. All Systems Fail" can be seen at the Zentrum Paul Klee from March 29 to August 4. The exhibition will open on the evening of March 28.
