According to a forecast by the Zewo Foundation, fewer donations will be made in Switzerland in 2023. Nevertheless, the volume of donations will remain robust and exceed the two billion Swiss franc mark for the fourth time in a row, the foundation announced on Wednesday.
The projected total value of donations in 2023 is around CHF 2.2 billion. A large proportion of this will go to aid organizations that carry the Zewo seal of approval. The aid organizations would have received around 1.4 billion francs in donations.
Donations from private households to Zewo-certified aid organizations decreased slightly in 2023 compared to the previous year. However, they remained at the high level of previous years - with estimates of around CHF 720 million.
Testamentary bequests to Zewo works are expected to amount to around 240 million francs in 2023. In addition, donations from grant-making foundations, collection vessels, companies, churches and municipalities are expected to amount to around 440 million francs.
The analysis is based on data from 36 Zewo-certified aid organizations. In order to avoid distortions, the projections for organizations with a domestic and foreign focus were prepared separately and the aid organizations were weighted according to income, the foundation added. The final donation statistics for 2023 will be published as soon as all of the charities' audited annual accounts are available, it added.
In 2022, Zewo recorded a record year for Swiss donations. This was significantly influenced by donations for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia. At that time, 2.5 billion Swiss francs in donations were recorded. The Zewo Foundation awards the Zewo seal of approval to audited and trustworthy organizations that collect donations. Around 500 organizations currently bear the label.
