More aircraft took off and landed at Zurich Airport in November than in the same month last year. However, November did not come close to the figures of the outstanding fall holiday month of October.
Zurich Airport recorded a total of 17,970 aircraft movements in November. This is 6.5% more than in November 2022. The gap to the pre-corona figures was around 8%, as an analysis of the data by the news agency AWP shows.
At the same time, take-offs and landings in November fell significantly behind the previous month of October (-22%). However, October is traditionally one of the strongest months in the flight year due to the fall vacations. Towards the end of the year, however, traffic tends to decline somewhat.
Gap to pre-corona year narrows
Counting the months of January to November together, 222,323 aircraft took off and landed at Zurich Airport. This is around 15 percent more than in the same period in 2022 and twice as many as in 2021.
However, there is still a gap of just under 11% compared to the figures from before the coronavirus crisis. However, the gap narrowed steadily over the course of the year. At the beginning of 2023, the gap was still around 20%.
Destinations to and from Asia in particular have still not fully recovered from the effects of coronavirus, especially China. However, traffic volumes are slowly increasing again there too, according to an airport spokeswoman.
The flight movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on daily updated statistics, in which all flights are recorded according to instrument flight rules. This so-called IFR traffic includes scheduled flights as well as cargo, business and private flights. However, the number of flight movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft handled and their capacity utilization.
Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for the month of November on December 12.
