Zurich Airport soon to put its first 3D scanner into operation

Zurich Airport will be putting the first 3D scanners for baggage screening into operation in the next few months. They are intended to simplify security checks and thus shorten queues.
The first 3D scanners will be put into operation in the coming months, said Josef Felder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Zurich Airport, in an interview with the NZZ newspaper on Monday. Zurich Airport was already planning tests with computer tomography scanners in 2019. However, the purchase of 3D scanners was put on hold due to the pandemic.
"Our aim during the pandemic was to survive without state aid," said Felder. "We managed to do that. But we put investments on hold." The purchase of 3D scanners was one of them. This gap is now being closed.
The new 3D scanners take three-dimensional images of hand luggage during security checks. Liquids and laptops no longer need to be unpacked, which saves a considerable amount of time. In addition, fewer follow-up checks are necessary. The technology is already being used in other countries.
