The 15-year-old who stabbed a Jew in Zurich is in custody. The chief youth prosecutor's office confirmed on Monday afternoon that he is a Swiss national with a Tunisian background.

Pre-trial detention is also possible in Switzerland for children from the age of 10. The Federal Supreme Court ruled in 2016 that this is possible in justified individual cases.

Whether the 15-year-old is an individual perpetrator or whether he acted in connection with a group is the subject of the investigation, the Zurich Youth Prosecutor's Office announced. Several media outlets had previously reported that the teenager had allegedly pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State.

The orthodox Jewish man who was attacked with a knife by the 15-year-old in Zurich on Saturday evening was admitted to hospital with life-threatening injuries. His life is no longer in danger.
